4 Tips to Get Your Closet Under Control

Storing your clothes and accessories properly and neatly can feel like an overwhelming task. Creating a plan to get your closet under control can help you feel more prepared to tackle the job. Here are four tips to get this space in order.

1. Purge Unused Items

Start off by getting rid of items that you don’t want or need any longer. Dedicate some time to go through each item in your closet and determine if it is something you want to keep. Purge things that you haven’t used in a long time, clothes that don’t fit, and damaged items. Make a pile of things to donate and things to throw away. Once you’re done sorting be sure to take care of getting the items out of the house right away so they don’t continue to clutter your space.

2. Have a Spot For Out Of Season Items

Keeping unseasonal items out of sight is a great way to keep your closet in order. You should have a dedicated area of your closet where you can put these items until you need them again. You could use a tote, or even a cute storage trunk with some Hamilton casters attached to the bottom to make it easy to slide in and out of the closet. When seasons change and you are switching these items out, you’ll have another great opportunity to purge unused or out of style items so that you can continue to stay on top of your organization.

3. Install Shelves

In addition to hanging rods, be sure to plan space within your closet where you can store folded items, clothes, shoes and accessories. Think about what types of items you need to store and choose shelving that will work best for those items. There are a variety of types of shelves and entire shelving systems that you can consider to fit your needs. Take a good look at what you have and consider new items you may plan to buy and factor those into your decision so you can have the most functional shelving system for your space.

4. Utilize All of the Space

Often space is limited in closets, so be sure to use all the space available to you. Items that aren’t used often can be placed on higher shelves. You can also install some corner shelves for shoes or other accessories to make sure that you are not wasting those areas.

Although closet organization can seem impossible, by following these easy tips you can definitely make yours more functional and easier to use.
